As I'm in the Second Half, I seem to be falling back on the character constantly asking herself questions in internal dialogue, a habit I thought I broke myself of in the First Half. I'll have to start searching question marks, I'm afraid.Kate Fallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12856887940900664692noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-306844181126721639.post-65873205398479521412012-01-30T11:57:45.492-05:002012-01-30T11:57:45.492-05:00I'm quite certain I have the First Half/Second...I'm quite certain I have the First Half/Second Half problem too.Akosshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13496491705617311571noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-306844181126721639.post-60394570906928494412012-01-28T14:59:47.651-05:002012-01-28T14:59:47.651-05:00I've never thought about this First Half/ Seco...I've never thought about this First Half/ Second Half business before, but now I'm positive I have this problem too!

Hmm... I think in the second half I'm focusing so much more on getting story events to weave together coherently, rather than on how it sounds as I do it.Andrea Mackhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15250681746122381149noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-306844181126721639.post-70269298347595358522012-01-28T09:11:32.917-05:002012-01-28T09:11:32.917-05:00Tiffany, that sounds like a good strategy! I think...Tiffany, that sounds like a good strategy! I think I might also read through all of the main character's dialogue without the rest of the story, to see if she still sounds in character for the whole book (I'm guessing she doesn't).Andrea Mackhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15250681746122381149noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-306844181126721639.post-26901999747796829722012-01-28T09:09:46.090-05:002012-01-28T09:09:46.090-05:00I think I overuse "But" so I try not to,...I think I overuse "But" so I try not to, and often find a sentence works well without it if I just delete the word.

My crit buddies also pointed out that I used "walked" a lot. I think that means I was writing too much about how characters moved around instead of writing their story.Andrea Mackhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15250681746122381149noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-306844181126721639.post-25806942634822634252012-01-27T18:30:58.172-05:002012-01-27T18:30:58.172-05:00This is a great post and full of reminders. I think part of it has to do with the fact that we know our characters better in the second half. I really need to use Wordle more!Christina Farleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03459203755170266842noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-306844181126721639.post-24475009981141196672012-01-27T14:25:51.406-05:002012-01-27T14:25:51.406-05:00haha
I definitely have the problem of working on ...haha

I definitely have the problem of working on the first half much more than the second half. That's why after I edit the first half (for the bazillionth time) I take a break and reflect over the characters and what I like and don't like about them, much as I would if I were a reader. Then I go back in the middle of the book, and the things that don't seem in character jump out more. It's been effective for me to catch my mistakes :)Hermana Tiffany Garnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08512773328198541058noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-306844181126721639.post-73076150518961539412012-01-27T11:33:20.054-05:002012-01-27T11:33:20.054-05:00'Was' and 'as' are the magical wor...'Was' and 'as' are the magical words I'm after at the moment...but 'looked' isn't a bad idea. I haven't heard that 'but' is a trouble word before. What do you do with those?
